In 1958, while serving in the Israeli Navy, I volunteered to be among the first Israeli submariners. The first group of Israeli submariners attended the French Navy's submariner's school 'Ecole de Navigation Sous-Marine' in Toulon, and later the Royal Navy's submariner's school in Portsmouth, England.  I was an Electrical CPO on the 'Tanin', formerly H.M.S Springer under Cdr. J. Dror, and came with the 'Tanin' to Israel.

It fell to me to design the current submariner's badge. I was horrified to see the badge they gave us when we arrived with our first submarine in Israel. It had all the elegance of a fried egg and was obviously designed by someone who never saw a submarine, so I sat and designed a new badge. I don't remember the details, but Capt. Dror gave me the ok, and then I had to go through the HQ. Eventually I got permission and a budget to go to Tel Aviv and order a number of units from some engraving shop in Allenby Street.

I left the Israeli Navy around 1963; when the Israeli submarine "Dakar" was lost in 1968, I was the chief photographer and member of the editorial board of Uri Avneri's 'Haolam Hazé' news magazine, so I wrote a three page article called 'Litzlol' - shown on this page in Hebrew.

I moved to Canada in 1973 and became a Canadian citizen in 1974. My family and I live on Salt Spring island in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of British Columbia, doing computer art, shooting VR Panoramas, and sailing.
